One of the rarest birds in North America, the specialized Snail Kite is physically designed to eat snails.  The quality of the environment is so critical for this species, because without a healthy snail population (which is dependent on water quality and level), there will be no Snail Kites.  They are a member of the raptor family and can be found in Florida (primarily in the Everglades region) and South America in shallow wet land environments foraging for apple snails.  They are the most specialized bird of prey in the world due to the unique shape of their talons.  This spectacular bird is depicted life size using 5 copper plates and meticulous hand painting with watercolors.

  • Technical Art Information:

    Image Size: 24” x 34”

This etching is hand-made on 5 large copper plates, each plate containing different colors.  In addition to the Arches rag paper used for the etching, the inks and paints employed to create the etching are of the highest quality. Each etching in the edition requires over 2 hours of consistent labor to print. Two weeks after the ink dries, several hours are required to finish the piece. Because of all the hand work involved, no two pieces are exactly the same.  The etching has a 2” border of paper around the image with a beautiful, deckled edge.   The edition is nearly sold out.

  • Framing:

Archival framing using supreme materials. The wood moulding is custom made with a pewter-champagne finish.  The mat is museum rag – 8 ply, and the mounting mat is an archival neutral grey.  The etching is floated to display an elegant, deckled edge of the beautiful rag paper that the etching is printed on.  The glass is high quality museum glass to greatly reduce glare and protect the art from fading. The back is sealed with a mounting wire attached and ready to hang.
